How Jeff Managed Hip Arthritis with Physical Therapy

When an Active Lifestyle Gets Waylaid by Arthritis

We started working with Jeff when he was in his mid-60s. Movement was a big part of his life, whether it was tending to his vegetable garden, taking long walks around the neighborhoods, or playing with his grandkids. But over time, he started noticing discomfort in his right hip.

At first, the pain was mild and only appeared after long periods of activity. But gradually, it worsened. He found himself avoiding stairs, limping after walks, and struggling to sleep due to hip discomfort. Daily tasks became frustrating, and he worried about losing his independence.

Jeff eventually learned he had developed osteoarthritis in his hip, and his doctor recommended physical therapy for arthritis pain relief before considering more invasive treatments, such as surgery. Skeptical but hopeful, he decided to give it a try.

After a few weeks, Jeff noticed that everyday movements felt easier. His limp improved, and he could get up from a chair without wincing.

Weak muscles place extra stress on arthritic joints, worsening pain. A key part of our approach is strengthening the surrounding muscles to offload joint pressure. 

In Jeff’s case, we focused on the following:

  • Glute and thigh exercises to support his hip

  • Low-impact aerobic exercises to build endurance and promote good health

With stronger muscles, Jeff felt more stable and confident in his movements. His pain lessened, and he was able to return to daily walks.

Movement Modifications for Long-Term Relief

In addition to his custom exercise program, we taught Jeff how to move in ways that reduce joint stress. For example, we helped him improve his posture and developed a plan to pace his activities to avoid overuse flare-ups.

By making these small adjustments, Jeff could enjoy his favorite activities without aggravating his arthritis.
