Choosing Your Physical Therapy Provider

Do I Need a Physician Referral to See a Physical Therapist?

This is a question that many patients tend to ask. “I’m in pain, I want help… but I need a referral – right?”

To answer this simply, no – you do not! What many patients don’t understand is that you do not need permission from your primary physician to go and see a physical therapist.

Why do my options seem limited?

Every state in America, in addition to the District of Columbia, allows you to seek the help of a physical therapist without a referral from your physician. You don’t even need to discuss it with them first!

Conversely, if your physician refers you to a specific practice (many times in cases where he or she may have financial interest), you are by no means obligated to go there. You may choose any facility that you believe will best fit your needs.

The only limitations to this are those within your insurance plan. Your insurance policy may require a visit to your primary physician first, or it may limit your access to preferred providers only. However, this does not mean you cannot first consult with a physical therapy practice to learn about your options.
